This helmet was worn by the Noyans, the commanders of heavy infantry divisions consisting of between 7,000 to 10,000 foot soldiers.The trident crest on top of Mongol helmets is a distinctive feature that symbolizes power and authority. These helmets, often worn by high-ranking Mongol commanders and nobility, were not only practical for protection but also served as a status symbol.
The term “Noyan” can be translated as “prince” or “leader,” and these commanders played crucial roles in the Mongol military hierarchy. They were typically responsible for leading tumens (units of 10,000 soldiers) and were often close advisors to the khans.
Baiju Noyan: He was a prominent commander in Persia, Armenia, Anatolia, and Georgia. Appointed by Ögedei Khan, Baiju played a significant role in the Mongol expansion into the Middle East.
Qarachar Noyan: A commander under Genghis Khan and an ancestor of Timur, the founder of the Timurid Empire. Qarachar’s legacy was significant in linking the Mongol Empire to the later Timurid dynasty.
