  • General Ma Chao (176–222 CE), courtesy name Mengqi, was a prominent military general and warlord during the late Eastern Han dynasty and the early Three Kingdoms period of China. He was the eldest son of Ma Teng, a notable warlord in Liang Province (covering parts of northwestern China)1.

    Key Events and Exploits

    • Rebellion Against Cao Cao: In 211 CE, Ma Chao formed a coalition with Han Sui and other northwestern warlords to revolt against the Han central government led by Cao Cao. The coalition was defeated at the Battle of Tong Pass, forcing Ma Chao to retreat1.

    • Control of Liang Province: After his initial defeat, Ma Chao returned to Liang Province, killed the provincial inspector Wei Kang, and took control of the region.

    • Defection to Liu Bei: Following the execution of his family members by the Han central government, Ma Chao sought refuge with the warlord Zhang Lu. Around 214 CE, he defected to Liu Bei's side and assisted in capturing Yi Province (modern Sichuan and Chongqing) from Liu Zhang1.

    • Service Under Liu Bei: Ma Chao served as a general under Liu Bei and participated in the Hanzhong Campaign in 219 CE. He was one of the Five Tiger Generals, a title given to Liu Bei's top military commanders2.

    • Death: Ma Chao died in 222 CE.
